Micro LED displays are considered to be the next generation of monitors, but Korea accounted for less than 15 percent of patent applications in the field of Micro displays. South Korea is concerned that Korean companies may lose their leading position in the display market in the future.
According to a report released by the south Korean intellectual property office on April 1, the United States and mainland China accounted for more than half of the global patent applications in the field of micro LED, while South Korea accounted for only 14.4 percent.
The report analyzed patent applicated between 2000 and April 2018.The USA submitted 525 applications, followed by mainland China with 353, accounting for 51.9 percent of global applications.South Korea submitted 243 patent applications,Taiwan China submitted 140, Ireland submitted 91.
South Korea lags far behind the United States and mainland China in the number of paten applicaiton, and in terms of the number of countries that submitted patents, Korea lags far behind other countries.South Korea gets an average of only two markets per patent. This means that South Korea, with the exception of South Korea, receives an average of only one country per patent. That puts South Korea in ninth place among the top ten patent applicants.
Ireland applied fewer patents than South Korea, but received an average of 5.07 overseas markets per patent. Ireland lags behind South Korea in patent filings, but is arguably in a better position to commercialise its patents. The United States receives 4.81 countries per patent, Taiwan China receives 2.99 countries per patent, mainland China receives 1.17 countries per patent, less than South Korea,South Korea intellectual property office officials said,"except South Korea, eight countries receives 3.89 countries per patent in average among the ten countries. In the field of micro LED patents, South Korea has a poor performance in both quantitative and qualitative indicators"
AVC Revo points out that China's panel factories are lagging behind South Korea in both stages of LCD/OLED technology, especially in the OLED display industry, South Korea's two giants, samsung and LG, have a monopoly on small - and large-sized OLED panels. The panel factories in mainland China are in a tough pursuit phase, so the only way to make up for technological backwardness is by investing heavily in factories and expanding capacity, but the problem is obvious that high- end products or high profits of the product is the current Chinese mainland panel factory serious shortfalls, therefore, the profitability of panel factories in mainland China is largely determined by market demand, with little room for self-regulation. With the continuous expansion of display application fields and the differences of requirements for display devices in various fields, aiming at the next generation of display technology and taking the lead has become the key factor for the panel factory to survive in the future. According to the historical experience and lessons as well as the development needs of enterprises, the mainland panel factories represented by BOE are more active in laying out the next generation of display technology, unwilling to fall behind the international display giants from research and development to production, and striving to achieve a real world leader in the next display revolution£¨Edit/AVC Revo£©
Micro LED display principle is the LED structure design for thin film, micro, array, its size is only about 1~10 micron grade;then Micro LED is batch transfered to the substrate, the substrate can be rigid, soft (transparent, opaque) substrate,Then make use of physical deposition processes --finishing the protective layer and the upper electrode, the packaging of the upper substrate can be carried out, and a simple Micro LED display can be completed. To make a display, the chip surface must be made into an array structure like an LED display, and each pixel must be controllable and individually driven to light up. As the following figure£º
Micro LED is in the ascendant, and OLED is on the verge of replacing LCD£¬this technology iteration is much gentler than the last (LCD instead of CRT)( According to ovi cloud (AVC), LCD/OLED will be coexisting in the next few years due to the differences in their application scenarios and costs) .But it's still clear that in smartphones, OLED is unstoppable as an alternative to a-si /LTPS. From the perspective of this replacement process, the characteristics of future display technology iterations are likely to be priority breakthroughs in a certain application field,as the technology matures and takes over the market,in addition the evolution of this display technology will become more complicated and tortuous due to more and more applications in the future.

LCD/OLED/Micro LED Comparison of key performance indicators
It is not difficult to see from the above table that MicroLED is fully rolling LCD/OLED in the main performance. Compared with LCD/OLED technology, Micro LED can control pixels independently and emit light independently, it has the characteristics of high brightness, low power consumption, high resolution and high color£¬If combined with nanoscale wiring, Micro leds can even make ultra-small leds as flexible as they can be bent. Because of these advantages, this technology can be widely adopted in the wearable industry. According to AVC Revo's calculations, VR will grow at a compound annual rate of more than 50% in the next five years, while AR will grow at nearly 200%. Therefore, it can be predicted that the rapid expansion of wearable device demand will continue to drive the growth of Micro LED display market.
Micro LED wide range of applications, suitable for emerging markets
With the increasing customization of terminal products in the future and the gradual maturity of each market segment, there will be more and more requirements on the resolution, size and shape of the display screen, which will also provide a certain opportunity for the development of Micro LED, because it can achieve ultra-high resolution, anisotropy, transparency and flexibility, etc.
Micro LED possible future scenarios
With the continuous progress of Micro LED technology, its application fields will be gradually improved. AVC Revo predicts that Micro leds will first take over the wearable market, especially the AR/VR market and some emerging display fields, and then penetrate into small and medium sizes, while also gaining a place in large sizes.
